What to Watch in 2011

I distinctly remember at the age of 14 speaking with my Godmother about a T.V. show and her telling me that “Child I’m so busy, I can’t even watch T.V.”. and I responded ” That’ll NEVER happen to me”. She laughed and said “You’ll see”. Well, fast forward a couple decades and what do you know she was right. By the time I fight my way through traffic and scrounge up something to eat I have either missed my show OR I’m too tired to wait until 10 or 11 pm to watch my show. Nevertheless, I catch up online should I miss a show.

This year a couple of my fave shows ended and I had to find something else to fill the void. The fall season was filled with so many shows, luckily I had someone help me weed out the shows not worth of my time and so I’m extending the favour to you. Here’s what I think you should be watching come 2011.. Cutting down this list is giving me STRESS:

1. Doctor Who:- This show has been around since Black and White T.V. but BBCAmerica has long since revamped the series. This show is as Sci-fi as sci-fi can get but I love it from the Tardis (his transport) to the different monsters set in different time periods. The historical aspects of the show (bringing Winston Churchill to life) also appeals to the nerd in me. Open your mind and check it out.

2. Law & Order:- Whether its special victims unit (SVU) or Criminal Intent (CI). I have lost many a Sundays to their marathons. It just keeps getting better. Watch this with caution, all episodes riles your emotions and you’re bound to get addicted.

3. Modern Family – LMAO . It’s hilarious. Trust me.

4. Secret Diary of a Call Girl :- It’s slated to come to American T.V. but I have been a fan from Season 1. The title says it all but I love how the show is able to share the experience of Belle (the star) without it being sordid. I’ve cried, laughed and cringed watching this show. Lots of eye candy for the men and an Eye opener for women. BBC America and now Showtime strikes again.

5. Spartacus Blood and Sand:- Yummy yum yum. If you’re a fan of 300 (the movie) then you’ll definitely be a fan of Spartacus. The story basically follows the story of Spartacus a notable leader of slaves during 109-71 BC. He led an uprising against the Roman Republic. Starz throws in a lot of juicy details, half naked men and sometimes fully naked women. ITS ROME DAMMIT and decadence reigns supreme. Season 1 ended quite epic and although the lead actor is suffering from cancer, Season 2 teasers are promising us nothing but the best.

6. True Blood:- Oo la laah! Things have gotten tasty on this show. Yes, its a vampire show but its good. Main characters Bill and Sookie (married in real life) struggle through a love that isn’t necessarily accepted by their small town. On a larger scale True Blood touches on many social and political issues such as racism, change and how society accepts differences. It’s all done quite tastefully:) … P.s. Eric Northman can take a bite out of me ANY day

7. Boardwalk Empire:- I started watching this but lost track. I have to see it online as I don’t have HBO (dont ask). Nevertheless, I plan to catch up during the break. Boardwalk Chronicles the live of Nucky Thompson the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City who juggles being a politician as well as a gangster. Its set in the prohibition era and is directed by Martin Scorsese.

8. Detroit 1-8-7 :- This new series on ABC has totally won me over. Set in Detroit it chronicles the gritty job of the State police and the cases they have to cover. The way in which it’s shot has such a real and different feel its almost like you are right there. It’s early in the season but I have already dubbed it the new NYPD Blue. Let me know what you think.

9. Vampire Diaries:- If there’s one thing about vampires, they sure are hot! I originally started watching this with my little sister. I fully expected to have to suffer through another teen angst ridden Twilight knock off. I was pleasantly surprised, the plot line is solid and these new teen actors have really given their all. If you like True Blood well this is like before they grew up. The villain known is Katherine is one bad mama jamma. She’s ooh so good at being bad.

10. I can’t decide!! Leave you comments on which show should complete my list.

Honourable Mentions: Gangland , Four Weddings, Dexter, Weeds, Californication, The Big C, Hoarders, Fringe, Burn Notice, Psych, Big Bang Theory, Two and Half Men.

Looking Forward to the comments …

Faith and Love,

Mamachel

Oooh Chel, LOVELY list… check out Southland (Regina King) and it comes on TNT now I believe. I think it got it’s first start on NBC if I’m not mistaken. Anyway, I’ve watched a few eps… and they were good. It’s set in California.

  2. Carole-Anne says:

Well season 2 should be starting soon… (if not this month, then January)… and Regina kicks ass. LOL

  3. Sherry says:

Weeds is my show! Also I’m a major NCIS fan (the original not LA)

  4. Keri says:

Nurse Jackie is coming up…check it out!

Hung is a good one too…male prostitute

  5. Orlando says:

I recently started to watch Law and Order and I love it…I am years late but I started watching because of the marathons.

  6. I like Law & Order: UK (BBC America) because I like that British TV has done what the Americans have done for so long — adapt a drama from across the pond. I like seeing the differences in the courtroom (though I wish they got more screen time) & the detective work aided by so much CCTV is fascinating when I consider the opposition to CCTV here in the US + the US Constitutional issues.

I also like the new Sherlock Holmes series (public TV here – PBS etc…). It grew on me but @touchofallright & @TDF_3 encouraged me to keep watching & I’m glad I did. It’s quirky and smart and funny.

I’m gonna check out Detroit 1-8-7 and maybe hop back on the True Blood train 🙂

  7. Carole-Anne says:

How could I forget Chase? Rose Rollins from the L Word is in it… It comes on NBC on a Monday night right after The Event. Check that out too *grin*

  8. Dexter and Fringe only as honorable mentions! I find it hard to believe that “Vampire Diaries” could be better than either, but okay…

Weeds and Californication are dying slow deaths on screen (similar to Smallville), and what can The Big C do after season 1?…

My favourite animated series is The Venture Brothers which is on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” lineup. Very worthy of being checked out. Also, coming in 2011: Game of Thrones shows a lot of promise.

  9. Candy Sweetz says:

“The Game” whooo hooo that’s my show .. since they canceled Girlfriends

  10. danboogy says:

Girl Modern Family is my shit!!! plus you and i have a special love for Vampire Diaries, but i totally understand i just watch them all on download when the season is over….always missing sumn

  11. Aurie says:

Detroit 1-8-7, Southland, Big Bang Theory, and Doctor Who are appealing to me for whenever I do get to watch a little TV.

  12. SeBiArt says:

Good one – and so true, NEVER watch TV. Well, almost never….quite a pity that Shameless didn’t make your list. Frankly I think that’s the best thing out there because it’s got some hysterically big balls, and NO ONE has EVER seen Will H. Macy like this before. Check it!

Nice meeting you @ BNM 🙂
